This is a fun read for all the summertime hikers and campers out there. A Walk in the Woods is author Bill Bryson’s account of hiking the 2,100-mile Appalachian Trail, which stretches from Georgia to Maine. Chock-full of historical facts about the trail, the book also features Bryson’s dry sense of humor. When he and hiking partner Katz bunk in one of the trail’s shelters for the night, Bryson quips: “If the mattress stains were anything to go by, a previous user had not so much suffered from incontinence as rejoiced in it.” If you can’t get to the trail yourself, this is the best way to experience it.
